Cults and Blogs: From Childhood Trauma to Healing Therapy
Dan Erickson, YVCC speech and communication instructor
As a child, Dan Erickson lived and worked on an 80-acre ranch. He was not allowed to live with his parents, but instead lived in a bunkhouse with a group of young men and boys. He worked 12-14 hour days every summer and worked 6-8 hour days during the school year. Dan was a child victim of Eden Farms, a cult that operated in Snohomish, Washington throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In his lecture on “cults and blogs,” Dan will recount his experiences at Eden Farms. He’ll also share excerpts from his novel, A Train Called Forgiveness, a story written entirely online. The story revisits difficulties he faced in his mid-to-late 20s as he came to terms with his traumatic past. For more information: http://danerickson.net/.
Dan Erickson teaches speech and communication at Yakima Valley Community College. He has a Master’s Degree from Washington State University where he studied the rhetoric of cult leaders. He is a writer and musician.
